Top Qualities of a Great Healthcare Professional
Whether it’s public or private sector, people expect an efficient, forthright, high-quality service with their quality of life at its very centre. On an individual basis this sounds perfectly manageable, but when we throw in emergencies, lengthy appointments, sudden changes to schedule, reprioritising entire workloads – and the countless other variables we might face in a typical working day, our usually strong personalities can be tested.
So, what are the principle qualities constantly required to succeed as a busy healthcare professional?
Compassion
It’s not only communicating negative news that requires a sensitive approach – everybody is entitled to a caring, considerate service. We can never know exactly what is going on in someone’s life, or mind – particularly when they require medical attention – so expect the erratic, and remedy the unpredictable with empathy.
Calmness
Similarly, the delivery of the negative and instructive can be much easier to digest when it comes from a collected, assured, but not over-confident party. Team and individual targets and deadlines can be regularly tested, but keeping cool under pressure pays dividends.
Good Communication
When under pressure, it can be very easy to become insular, and try to resolve everything ourselves. People who develop the instinct to naturally share best practice, new information, and ask for help are incredibly valuable to any workforce. Talking considerately to customers and colleagues is essential.
Flexibility
Whether it’s due to an irregular or unpredictable day, or many tasks require our attention at the same time, adopting an adaptable approach to work is a valuable attribute. Being able to manage multiple tasks takes an exceptional individual, with a strong sense of awareness.
Information Gathering
The ability to extrapolate information from a range of sources, and efficiently decode it, can lead to significant changes in how we may work with what we find. Every day is in some way research for the next, and we expand our knowledgebase daily with new data, instinct, and experience.
Attention to detail
Building on knowledge learned with an understanding of how it is applied, and picking up on potentially unnoticed details and minutiae can be priceless in healthcare. A methodical, experienced approach to work can make hidden irregularities become visible.
Tolerance
No job is easy, especially when it involves other people – and their emotions. A resilience to confrontation and steadiness when faced with impassioned spontaneity can be reinforced by learning to anticipate when it is required. People, by nature, are unpredictable, and it takes a strong, unwavering will to stay steadfast in the face of strife.
Sense of humour
Maintaining a positive, outgoing persona throughout every day is practically impossible. However, the ability to laugh, and make people smile, is incredibly advantageous in the workplace. Laughter can be conducive, compulsive, and contagious – and can make hard work fun again.
Respect
This applies to us, to them, and to all, and we must remember that nobody is perfect. When someone makes a mistake, it does not mean they have failed – only that they have done something they now have the opportunity to learn from. If we appreciate ourselves, and others – and all of our imperfections – we are closer to a rewarding work experience.
Patience
A vital virtue for anybody who works with people, which at times might feel like an overwhelming combination of all of the above. Diligence to this quality, however, will pay off on a daily basis. If we operate with an understanding that every task will be complete, and done to the best of our abilities, then the periods of circumstantially-inflicted moderation pay off.
At the core of every great personality, on every staff list, is a combination of experience, skill, and high-quality learning.
